Prof. Dr. Tonio Hölscher

The office of the Ombudsman at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” is held by Prof. Dr. Tonio Hölscher. As an Ombudsman he provides assistance to help manage and resolve workplace and/or academic issues. He acts as an impartial contact person for all members of the Cluster to discuss problems and to identify options for problem solving.

The Ombudsman can be addressed in cases of inter-personal and inter-institutional problems and conflicts when these cannot be solved by direct communication among those who are immediately involved in the problematic situation. He provides an impartial, independent, informal and confidential place to facilitate equitable resolutions to concerns that arise within the Cluster. The Ombudsman does not take sides on behalf of any individual or cause. He treats all inquiries as confidential. A visitor can discuss concerns with the Ombudsman without committing to further disclosure, taking action, or seeking formal resolution.

Prof. Dr. Tonio Hölscher has a sympathetic ear and offers help from an outside perspective to all researchers, students, and administrative staff at the Cluster. As he has been one of the Principal Investigators of the Cluster since its very beginning and coordinated research project D6 “Antithesis East – West” in the first funding period, he is familiar with the Cluster’s history and structure.

Prof. Dr. Tonio Hölscher is emeritus Professor of Classical Archaeology at Heidelberg University. After graduating in 1965 in Heidelberg, he received his habilitation from the University of Würzburg in 1972. Since 1975, he is Professor of Classical Archaeology at Heidelberg University and was given emeritus status in 2009. Among others, Prof. Hölscher is member of the German Archaeological Institute, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Academia Europaea London.
