- About Us
The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context: The Dynamics of Transculturality" at Heidelberg University is part of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments. The initiative is carried out by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat). The objective of the Cluster is to examine cultural exchange processes with a strong focus on interdisciplinary research. Established in October 2007 in cooperation with renowned international institutions, the Cluster provides excellent academic facilities and prospects, especially for young scholars.
Aims and Objectives
Aim of the Cluster is to enhance the understanding of the multi-layered interactions between and within Asia and Europe - an area of great significance for academia as well as for contemporary society and politics. We achieve this by examining the processes of exchange between cultures and establishing the concept of transculturality as a basic approach in the humanities and social sciences.
The Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies (KJC) is the 'heart' and institutional home of the Cluster "Asia and Europe". Here, the Cluster community gathers regularly to attend lectures and roundtables, or simply to debate critical research matters. In addition to the events, a large number of Cluster members have their office at the KJC.
The Cluster consists of a network of interdisciplinary researchers, who are affiliated with one of four research areas. Due to the diverse backgrounds of our researchers, they help the Cluster develop innovative and sustainable concepts of research, by using different perspectives, skills and approaches obtained from various fields of knowledge. Decisions on everyday management or overall strategic issues are approached by an efficient, flat-hierarchy organisational structure.
The Cluster has a broad network of partner institutions, most of which are in Asia and the United States. They help foster the educational exchange and the collaboration of the best minds of a variety of subject matters.
