Family Services and Child Care

To promote a better compatibility of family and career, the Cluster informs its members about childcare facilities at Heidelberg University and offers assistance when needed. The wide range of short and long-term childcare programmes, job-sharing opportunities, and student support services guarantee a family friendly working environment.

Cluster members can apply for a variety of university-based childcare programmes and private child care facilities in and around Heidelberg. Furthermore, there are a wide range of services and measures for student parents offered by the Studentenwerk Heidelberg and local authorities. Job-sharing, flexible working hours, and part-time work patterns are also available on all levels in order to promote the compatibility of family and career.

Service for Families

In order to provide a family friendly working environment at Heidelberg University, the service for families provides information for all questions concerning family and working life at Heidelberg University. It informs families about childcare options, finding a nanny, school places, finding a babysitter, leisure time facilities, childcare during school holidays, and all other family matters.

Child Care Facilities at Heidelberg University

Heidelberg University offers a range of child care facilities, which meet the individual needs of each family and relieve them from parental concerns during their working hours. The Kinderhaus Heidelberg provides information on all child care facilities offered by the university including application forms and detailed descriptions.

The Kinderkrippe - Heidelberg University’s crèche offers childcare for young children between 7:30am until 6pm. The crèche is located closely to the university campus Neuenheimer Feld. 


The Kindertagesstätte - Heidelberg University’s daycare centre offers daily childcare from 7:30am until 6pm for children of pre-school age. 


The Backup-Serviceat the Kinderhaus offers childcare for sudden or unpredictable situations, such as unexpected business trips. The service takes children between the age of eight years or younger to the KidsClub or the Kindertagesstätte.

The Congress Childcare at Heidelberg University offers childcare for children of visiting scholars from other national universities or from abroad who came to Heidelberg to attend conferences.

The Holiday Childcare Schemes at Heidelberg University offer childcare during school-holidays and the university provides a manifold programme including sports, handicrafts, creative workshops and excursions.

The KidsClub at Heidelberg University offers childcare for children of scholars who visit Heidelberg University for a research term.

Child Care Facilities in and around Heidelberg

In addition to the university-based child care facilities, the city of Heidelberg provides a wide range of public and private childcare centres. KidS - Programme for Student Parents

Student parents are offered information at the KidS Programme for Student Parents concerning exams, student fees, part-time study, counselling services, leave of absence, study breaks, and a mensa for kids. Furthermore, students are advised about maternity/parental leave, financial aid, and other support services.

The Clearing Service supports recent mothers during the negotiations with their supervisors and helps to work out constructive conditions for the continuation of their future academic careers.

Concierge Service

The Concierge Service was initiated in order to help scientists, visiting researchers and employees at Heidelberg University to organize their daily routine and to make room for more quality time apart from work and domestic duties. The services offered by the Concierge include the search and arrangement of favourable services, the coordination of appointments, advisory services for individual concerns of everyday life and cooperation with regional providers. All services are free of charge and can be adapted to the specific needs of each customer.

Welcome Centre for International Scholars

Dual Career Service

The Dual Career Service is the contact point for information and counselling concerning the support of partners and families of newly-hired university professors. The Dual Career Service provides information on employment opportunities in and around Heidelberg, offers coaching for job applications, and answers questions on topics like accommodation, life in Heidelberg, as well as child care facilities.
