Über Anil Domenic Paralkar

Anil's research investigates the European encounter with South Asian foodways in 15th to 17th century. The project analyses how Europeans discussed the (cultural) purity of food in India and how that lead to a proto-orientalisation of the Indian population by European writers on the subcontinent. In consequence, this process added to the justification of the colonisation of India during the high-time of British imperialism, as South Asian nourishment was perceived as inferior to British eating habits. The project critically discusses this development and thus combines food history with approaches from postcolonial and transcultural studies.
