Lebenslauf

Since October 2008: PhD candidate at Heidelberg University, Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context", Junior Research Group A4 "The Fascination of Efficiency".

Doctoral thesis on “On War and China – Clausewitzian Theory, German Military Missions and the Migration of German Strategic Theory into Chinese Strategic Thinking Between 1880 and 1937” (working title).

1990 to 2009: Employed with the State Institute for Civic Education Baden-Wuerttemberg (Landeszentrale für politische Bildung). Development of educational formats (seminars, study trips, teacher training programmes, exhibitions, simulations as a teaching tool, teaching material and publications etc.).

Head of two major projects:

2001 – 2009: “Learning from the Past – Teaching for the Future” trinational Canadian – German – Polish project for university students on the Holocaust.

2004 – 2007: “Mehr als nur Gäste – demokratisches Zusammenleben mit Muslimen in Baden-Württemberg” (project on and with Muslims in the province, their history, their role in society and political life). Large exhibition in four major cities and numerous seminars and trainings for teachers, members of the police force etc. Financed by the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg.

Academic training

Study of political science, current history, German literature and language at the Universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg with a master degree from the University of Mannheim. Topic of the interdisciplinary master’s thesis (German literature and history) was “Ich war so gerne Deutscher – Victor Klemperers Tagebücher 1933 – 1945”.

A second master of arts in Germanic languages and literatures from the University of Waterloo (Canada) was achieved in 1998 during a sabbatical from the State Institute for Civic Education.

Places of international studies included University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), University of California San Diego (UCSD), University of Waterloo (Canada), Yad Vashem (Israel).
Publications

Since 2005:  Over 15 publications on “German history, new wars, genocide, holocaust and remembrance”.

Teaching experience at university level

2000 – 2009: Adjunct faculty at the International University, Bruchsal. Programme designer and lecturer for accredited bachelor-programmes in International Politics and International Comparative Politics

2002 – today: Regular guest lecturer for crisis management at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom (formerly Royal Military College for Science and Technology). Target group are high ranking international military officers and civilians.

2007 & 2008: Lecturer for courses in history (history of National Socialist persecution policy) and international relations (on Darfur and on Afghanistan in cooperation with Dr. Peter Schmidt) at the University of Heidelberg

2007 & 2008: Guest lecturer on international relations and crisis management at the Institute for Technology Bandung, Indonesia

2001 – 2007: Lecturer for current history at the Department of History at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) (selected topics of seminars: History of National Socialism, Holocaust, genocides during the 20th century, media and war, the depiction of the opposition against Hitler in German film)

 

International consulting and crisis management simulations

Since 2000: Development and conduction of over 60 international crisis management simulations for diverse target groups: university students, the military, civilian members of ministries, and the industry (ICMS/ in cooperation with Dr. Peter Schmidt). Development and conduction of export modules of simulations for the United Kingdom, Canada, Indonesia, Greece.

2008: Consulting on “Methods for dealing with a violent past” for the German Development Service (GTZ) and its local partner (FLICT) in Sri Lanka.
