Über Silke Bechler

Between 1984 and 1998 I got my primary and secondary education at the „Christoph von Schmidt Schule“ and the “Gymnasium” in Dinkelsbühl (Germany). In autumn 1998 I moved to Heidelberg, where I started to study Ethnology, Geography and Art History at the Ruprecht-Karls-University. Two years later I shifted my focus on Ethnology and German Language Studies. Inspired by my ethnological studies and a travel to India, I began learning Sanskrit and Pali. In autumn 2001 Classical Indology and Ethnology became my major subjects. I did my M.A. in 2007 with the M.A.-thesis “Hochzeit in Indien - dargestellt und erläutert anhand Śrī Dadhirāma Marāsinis Vivāhapaddhati“. From May until November 2008 I worked as a student assistant for the pilot project “Traditional Performances in New Public Spheres and Media” of the Cluster of Excellence at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. Since September 2008 I participate as a Graduate Student in the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies of the Cluster of Excellence at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg, where I am working on the PhD-project “The Vedic Sacrifice (homa) in the Transcultural Public Sphere”. Since January 2009 this project is part of the research project “Religion on Stage: Traditional South Asian Performances in New Public Spheres and Media” of the Cluster of Excellence at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. Among my research interests are traditional and modern ritual practices in India and Nepal, healing and possession practices, performance studies and Hindunationalism.
