Aims and Structure

The three-year Doctoral Degree Program in Asian and Transcultural Studies focuses on Eurasia and/or the Mediterranean. The program employs a transcultural approach to study these regions in a way that transcends notions of historically fixed geographical, ethnic or linguistic borders. By instead focusing on processes of cultural exchange, it challenges the limitations imposed by such boundaries and the institutions that reproduce them.

Candidates have access to a large and vibrant international academic community being trained at two of Europe’s top universities. They spend a minimum of one year at each university. Generally, the second year will be spent doing fieldwork or at the partner university. In addition, they participate in regular joint graduate student workshops.

The program combines the European model of individualized doctoral studies with structured guidance by both institutions. Students will be assigned one advisor from each university.

Fellowships

Candidates will be supported by a three-year fellowship that starts in October of each year. The overall dissertation fellowship, including travel and research allowance, amounts to a total sum of ca. 69.000,- EUR.
