This Phase 2 project is a collaboration between HRA, the Junior Research Group Digital Humanities/Digital Cultural Heritage and the Kurpfältische Museum, Heidelberg. Funded with a Field of Focus 3: Core Facilities grant it explored a retrodigitization workflow based on the digital research infrastructure developed by the HRA. During the project a prototype of an annotation tool (ann-y-can) for Open Annotation Data Model (OADM) annotations was developed.

As a case study the unpublished documentation of the roman fort excavation in Heidelberg-Neuenheim in the 1970th was digitized for the first time. The diary and maps from the excavation campaign have been transcribed and encoded as inscriptions in the VRA metadata schema.

The VRA metadata records that have been created in Phase 2 are the basis for a Phase 3 activity in which the HRA and Data Futures explore the extraction of annotations from core metadata sets. With the transformation of VRA inscription sets to OADM annotations not only coordinates can be added but also authorship for transcriptions becomes clearer.
