A film portrait introduces Dr. Roland Wenzlhuemer and his research work. The Junior Research Group Leader focuses on telecommunication and globalisation in the 19th century.

In the film, Roland Wenzlhuemer describes his research on the role of telegraphy in the 19th century. In particular, he analyses its impact on the globalisation at that time and vice versa. Thus, he examines how the global telegraph network emerged as a new vehicle for transcultural contact and interaction.

PD Dr. Roland Wenzlhuemer is Junior Research Group Leader of the projects B9 "Information Flows" and B17 "The nation State and Beyond" at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. The title of his habilitation thesis is “Transforming Global Spaces: The Telegraph, Communication and Globalization in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century”.

The film portrait was produced by the Cluster’s film crew, Christoph Bertolo and Anne Scheuing. The film is part of a series of a series initiated by the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology under supervision of Prof. Dr. Christiane Brosius. The idea is to present selected Cluster researchers and their projects. Among others, the ethnomusicologist Franck Bernède, the media practitioner Deepali Gaur Singh and the archaeologist Philipp W. Stockhammer have already been portrayed.
