Film about Conference in Harbin

08. Mär. 2011

The film “Meet me in Harbin!” follows the conference and summer school organised by the Cluster’s research project B10 in the city of Harbin, China, in June 2009. The subject of the conference was the early-twentieth-century Northeast China and its encounters with the world.

Flash ist Pflicht!

„Meet me in Harbin!“ was made on the occasion of the conference “Global Challenge and Regional Response: Early-Twentieth-Century Northeast China’s Encounters with the World” and a summer school. Following the academic events and highlighting some of the debates of the conference, it also tries to grasp the spirit of the city where historical foreign remainders meet the realities of contemporary China. The film was directed by Thomas Lahusen and Olga Bakich (both: University of Toronto). It was produced by Chemodan Films (Toronto 2011).

The conference and the summer school brought together scholars from all over the world to discuss the unique history of the region where global and local interests converged. It focused on the phenomenon of “Glocalization” in Manchuria as Northeast China is known to the Western world. Both events were organised by the Cluster’s research project B10 “Harbin”, which is coordinated by Dr. Frank Grüner, in cooperation with Dr. Ines Prodöhl (German Historical Institute, Washington, D.C., USA), and Professor Dan Ben-Canaan (School of Western Studies, Heilongjiang University, China).
