Book by Thomas Maissen on Swiss Heroic Tales

The latest publication by Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen arouses great public interest. In this book, the former director of the Cluster discloses the history and meaning of heroic stories in Switzerland.

In his book "Schweizer Heldengeschichten - und was dahintersteckt", Prof. Maissen discusses several heroic stories and myths ranging from the battle of Morgarten in 1316 to the figure of Wilhelm Tell. According to the introduction, such tales are often used by politicians in order to create national identity and to agitate against Europe. As a result, the publication arouses great public interest and many media such as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Tages-Anzeiger and Berner Zeitung have reviewed the book already. At the same time, a previous book by Prof. Maissen on the history of Switzerland is published in a new edition. The “Geschichte der Schweiz”, first published in 2010, was also very successful.

The book "Schweizer Heldengeschichten - und was dahintersteckt" - 240 pages - was published in March 2015 by the "hier + jetzt" publishing house. The book "Geschichte der Schweiz" - 359 pages - was first published in 2010 by "hier + jetzt" and is now available as a paperback by Reclam.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen is Director of the German Historical Institute Paris ("Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris") and Professor of Modern History at Heidelberg University. Until August 2013, he was Director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context".
