New Book on Material Culture

24. Jul. 2015

Dr. Philipp W. Stockhammer, coordinator of project MC8.2 "Innovation Management", and Prof. Hans Peter Hahn (University of Frankfurt) have edited the book "Lost in Things - Fragen an die Welt des Materiellen". It was published by Waxmann Publishing House in 2015.

The book addresses material culture and the complex human-thing relationship. Are we lost in things? Or are the things being lost from us - in their excess, their variety, and their everyday presence? The publication approaches such questions by integrating current anthropological and archaeological research.

The volume represents the outcome of a conference held in 2013 by the Research Training Group “Value and Equivalence” at Goethe-University Frankfurt and the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe" at University of Heidelberg. Under the title "Lost in Things – Questioning Functions and Meanings of the Material World", anthropologists and archaeologists examined things and objects, discussing how traces left by and through objects - as well as their interpretations - are not indicative of their usage only. The conference had been organised by the volume editors Hans Peter Hahn and Philipp W. Stockhammer together with Martin Fotta.

The book "Lost in Things - Fragen an die Welt des Materiellen" - 212 pages - has been published by Waxmann Publishing House in the series "Tübinger Archäologische Taschenbücher - Tübingen Archaeological Paperbacks". The volume includes contributions by Jennifer M. Bagley, Ludĕk Brož, Hans Peter Hahn, Martin Holbraad, Arnica Keßeler, Alesya Krit, Bjørnar Olsen, Þóra Pétursdóttir, Jens Soentgen, Philipp W. Stockhammer, Sebastian Schellhaas, Mario Schmidt.

Philipp W. Stockhammer is postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Pre- and Protohistory at Heidelberg University and coordinator of project MC8.2 "Innovation Management" at the Cluster "Asia and Europe". From 2014-16, he is junior fellow at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies.

Hans Peter Hahn is professor for anthropology at the Institute of Anthropology at Goethe-University Frankfurt.
