New Issue of the E-Journal "Transcultural Studies"

07. Jan. 2013

The new issue of the e-journal Transcultural Studies is now available online. It features an enhanced podcast by Neil MacGregor, an article by Subrata Mitra, and a themed section on “The Transcultural Travels of Trends”.

The issue opens with an editor’s note by Rudolf G. Wagner introducing Monica Juneja as co-editor and Antje Flüchter as a new member of the e-journal’s editorial board. The multimedia section includes an enhanced podcast of a talk by the director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor, who speaks on “Trajectories of Meaning: the Shifting Power of Things”. In the article “Sub-National Movements, Cultural Flow, the Modern State, and the Malleability of Political Space: From Rational Choice to Transcultural Perspective and Back Again”, Subrata Mitra explores the dynamics of the interaction between post-colonial, national governments that are strongly committed to maintaining the unity of the “national” realm inherited from the colonial power and sub-national movements that vie for greater autonomy or even independence and mobilize resentments of regional groups against their marginalization. Two essays follow in the second and last installment of the themed section “The Transcultural Travels of Trends”. Huang Xuelei’s work on “From East Lynne to Konggu Lan: Transcultural Tour, Trans-Medial Translation” and Petra Thiel writes on “Tracking Trends and Brands in the International Children's Book Market”.

Initiated in 2010, Transcultural Studies is published by the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University and hosted by the University Library of the same institution. This peer-reviewed, open-access journal is committed to promoting the knowledge and research of "transculturality" in all disciplines. The journal's editors are Rudolf G. Wagner and Monica Juneja; its managing editor is Andrea Hacker.
