Super Global University: Kyoto-Heidelberg Partnership

03. Okt. 2014

Kyoto University was successful in the Japanese “Super Global University” (SGU) funding competition to deepen its partnership with Heidelberg University. HCTS-Professor Harald Fuess advised on this grant application during his research leave in Kyoto and will be responsible for its implementation with Heidelberg University. Type A SGU grants amount to 500 million Yen (about 3.6 million Euro) for a total duration of ten years.

The Kyoto University proposal aims to further the internationalization of graduate education and research, especially in the humanities and social sciences, such as the development of international double M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs. Kyoto University is one of the most important universities in Japan. It is linked to Heidelberg through the HEKKSaGOn network and the Graduate School of Letters and the Graduate School of Economics offer five exchange places to MATS students every year and the Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit (KUASU) is one of the core international partners of the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS). Most recently, Kyoto University has opened a liaison office at Heidelberg University. And next year Heidelberg will also have a liaison officer at Kyoto University.

The Super Global University (SGU) competition is a new initiative by the Japanese government. It aims to attract many more foreign scholars and students and to boost collaboration with overseas counterparts to offer joint degrees in order to internationalize Japanese universities. The goal is to have more than 10 Japanese universities ranked among the world’s top 100 within the next decade. At present, Kyoto University is one of two Japanese universities listed in the top 100 of the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings.
