New Book by Axel Michaels on Buddha

A new book by the Cluster's Co-Director Prof. Dr. Axel Michaels has been published. It presents a study of life and teaching of the founder of Buddhism.

Based on numerous historical Buddhist sources, Prof. Michaels’s book titled “Buddha: Leben, Lehre, Legende” sheds light on the historical kernel of the Siddhārtha Gautama’s legend. It describes the main principles of early Buddhist teaching, the development of different schools and the history of worship of Buddha.

The book has been published by the Beck Verlag in 2011 as a part of the series “C.H. Beck Wissen”.

Prof. Dr. Axel Michaels is Co-director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" and holds the Chair in Classical Indology at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University. He is Speaker of the Collaborative Research Centre 619 "Dynamics of Ritual" as well as of the Council 106 "Cultural Anthropology, Religious Studies, Non-European Cultures" of the German Research Foundation.
