Winter semester 19/20: Lecture series "Ambivalent Enmity"

03. Dez. 2019

The Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) is cooperating with the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg in the winter semester 2019/20 for the lecture series "Ambivalent Enmity," which takes place on Thursdays at 6 pm at the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies.

In a time that is characterized by societal and international polarization, the subject of enmity has grown alarmingly relevant. The lecture series "Ambivalent Enmity" brings together different perspectives from the areas of social studies, cultural studies and the humanities, and looks at constructions of, experience with and traditions in relation to enmity in the past and present. An important focus within the series will be the tension-filled relationship of attraction and rejection: often, there is a close connection of hostility, secret admiration and mutual study and learning in situations of contact, different forms of representation and the production of knowledge.

The lectures look at questions like: How can the language and mentality of the enenmy be studied? How are enmity and attraction connected? How can cultural hostility be expressed in society? How can enmity be explained with psychological models? How is enmity staged politically and aesthetically? Are there continuing models of enmity - for example in the from of piracy? Are there hostile relationships between mankind and nature? How does enmity find a voice? And how do we see enmity as a confrontation between "East" and "West?"
