International conference on Asian popular music

Asian popular music was the topic of an international conference held at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" from August 5th to 7th, 2010.
Under the title "Lock’n’Loll is here to stay", 25 experts from 10 countries talked about "Stereotyping, Domesticating and Inventing Popular Musics in/of Asia".
Prof. Mitsui Tôru from Kanazawa University (Japan) held the keynote lecture. He reviewed "How Knowledge about Popular Music of the West Was Transferred to Japan". The following lectures analysed how this knowledge was adapted and advanced. Among others, Dr. Oliver Seibt discussed how the trend "Visual Kei" evolved in Japan and what it means to Western youth.
The international conference was organised by the members of the research projects "Creative Dissonances" and "Hidden Grammars". The former's coordinators are Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler and Prof. Dr. Dorothea Redepenning, the latter's are Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch and Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler.
The conference received a positive media response. Several newspapers reported about the event. Among others, the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" interviewed Dr. Oliver Seibt about the conference and his research topic "Visual Kei".
