Research Fellowship for Lion König

20. Apr. 2016

Dr. Lion König, Associate Researcher of the Cluster "Asia and Europe", has been awarded a fellowship by the German Research Council (DFG) to carry out postdoctoral research at Oxford University.

König will be based at the Asian Studies Centre at St. Antony’s College for a period of two years to work on nation-building in South Asia. At Oxford, he will be mentored by Dr. Faisal Devji, Director of the Asian Studies Programme. His new project looks at larger fundamentals of nation-building from a theoretical, an institutional, and an iconographic perspective, using India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as case studies. The dissimilar developments in the three countries will provide rich comparative insight into strategies of nation-building, while the theoretical-methodological breadth of the work, which draws on political science as well as cultural studies, contributes to the furthering of interdisciplinary approaches in the social sciences.

Dr. Lion König is an Associate Researcher of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Asia and Europe in a Global Context’ and former member of the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS). He has co-edited "Globalisation and Governance in India: New Challenges to Society and Institutions" (Routledge, 2016), "Politics in South Asia: Culture, Rationality and Conceptual Flow" (Springer, 2015), and "The Politics of Citizenship, Identity and the State in South Asia" (Samskriti, 2012).
