Cluster held General Meeting

10. Feb. 2017

On Thursday afternoon, the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" held its second General Meeting in the winter semester 2016/2017. The meeting took place at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies.

Acting Director Prof. Barbara Mittler headed the meeting and welcomed the Cluster members. She first reported about the latest news from the Cluster, such as events planned and grants for research or conferences. She then passed the word over to Prof. Axel Michaels, who talked about the “Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach”. The archive has started a project to collect German textual and visual material from Asia. Axel Michaels invoked the Cluster members to let him know if such materials are available to somebody for this purpose.

Barbara Mittler informed the attendees of the meeting about the plans of Joseph Maran and Axel Michaels to retire from their positions as Directors of the Cluster. Elections to fill the positions again will be held in the next general meeting; Prof. Monica Juneja and Prof. Nikolas Jaspert are the candidates. Mittler also gave an update of the latest publications, awards and appointments and the latest developments in respect to the Excellence Strategy.

Dr. Andrea Hacker, managing editor of the Cluster, introduced the brochure “100 books” to the Cluster members. The brochure has recently been produced by the publications office and features descriptions of books that were produced by Cluster members as an outcome of their work at the Cluster. The description includes an abstract of the book as well as a short biography of the author, a review along with further interesting details. It will soon be made accessible on the Cluster’s homepage and will also be available in print.

Axel Michaels thanked Barbara Mittler for her work as Acting Director in the name of the directorate and Cluster members. In the summer semester, he will take on the role of Acting Director of the Cluster for six month.

The next General Meeting will take place on April 27, 2017. It is a major event at the Cluster, where all members come together and exchange important information.
