Keynote Lecture by Sunder Rajan at the Annual Conference

05.Okt 2011

On Wednesday evening, the Annual Conference was opened with a keynote lecture by Prof. Kaushik Sunder Rajan (Chicago). He spoke on intellectual property rights and the constitution of biomedicine.

Under the title "Property, Rights, and the Constitution of Contemporary Indian Biomedicine: Notes from the Gleevec Case", Prof. Sunder Rajan traced how intellectual property regimes drive the re-institutionalisation of pharmaceutical development in India. With reference to the exemplary case of a patent on the anti-cancer drug Gleevec, he analysed the technical and constitutional components. Thus, he discussed questions regarding the relationship between biocapital and issues of constitutionalism and social responsibility.

Prof. Kaushik Sunder Rajan is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Social Sciences at the University of Chicago, USA. Initially trained as a biologist, he obtained his PhD in History and Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT. His main research is on the anthropology of science, technology and medicine.

The Annual Conference 2011 of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" takes place from October 5 to 7 at Heidelberg University. More than 100 scholars from the Cluster and around the globe discuss the conference theme "Frontiers of Knowledge: Health, Environment and the History of Science".
