Cluster holds Annual Conference

The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" holds its third Annual Conference from October 5 to 7, 2011. This year's theme is "Frontiers of Knowledge: Health, Environment and the History of Science".

More than 100 scholars from the Cluster and around the world are expected to participate at the podium and panel discussions. The conference features two keynote lectures: Prof. Sunder Rajan (Chicago) will speak on "Property, Rights, and the Constitution of Contemporary Indian Biomedicine: Notes from the Gleevec Case". Prof. Janet Hunter (London) will give a talk with the title "The Markets have Collapsed into Complete Confusion: Market Operation after the Great Kantō Earthquake of September 1923".

The conference programme includes four major podium discussions. The topics range from "Ancient Medicine", "Circulation and Changing of Conceptions of Knowledge", "Seascapes and Shipping", to "Travelling Technologies, Tracing Transculturality: Paradigm Shifts in Science, Medicine and Society". Nine further panel sessions will question how we have conceived and are conceiving knowledge in the past and present.

The Annual Conference 2011 will be opened on October 5 at 6 pm in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University with the keynote lecture by Prof. Rajan. From October 6 to 7, the conference will take place at the Neue Universität of Heidelberg University (Neue Aula and Lecture Halls 8 and 9).
